Profile

Dwight Yoakam

Dwight Yoakam is a singer, songwriter, actor and film director from Kentucky. He is most famous for his pioneering country music. Popular since the early 1980's, he has recorded more than twenty-one albums. More than thirty of his singles ranked high on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, and he has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

He wrote all his own songs, and performed mostly outside traditional country music channels, which caused some difficulty in getting his work accepted. In particular he operated out of Los Angeles, rather than Nashville.

Nevertheless he worked hard and prevailed. His debut album, “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.,” included the hit singles "Guitars Cadilacs" and "Honky Tonk Man," and won many fans. His follow-up albums, "Hillbilly Deluxe" and "Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room," were also highly successful.

Yoakam eventually became accepted by the country music community. Johnny Cash once cited Yoakam as his favorite country singer. Chris Isaak said Yoakam "is about as good a songwriter that ever put a pen to paper." Some have compared him to Hank Williams. However Dwight would rather be Dwight Yoakam, and do his own thing.

Dwight's live performances are also outstanding, and he maintains a busy tour schedule. He often performs in Atlantic City.
