Lynyrd Skynyrd is a rock band, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964.
The original band consisted of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Gary Rossington, guitarist Allen Collins, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and drummer Bob Burns. Known initially as the group, "My Backyard," the band's name was later changed to Lynyrd Skynyrd to immortalize a school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, a legendary antagonist of long-haired students.
The band became prominent in the Southern United States in 1973, and rose to worldwide recognition before several members died in an airplane crash in 1977, including lead vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. The band reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny Van Zant as the frontman, and continues to record music today. In 2009 the band released a new album named "God & Guns." The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006.
Present members of the band are: Gary Rossington - Guitar, Johnny Van Zant - Vocals, Tickey Medlocke - Guitar, Mark "Sparky" Matejka - Guitar, Michael Cartellone - Drums, Robert Kearns - Bass and Peter Keys - Keyboards.
