Profile

Don Rickles

Don Rickles is a comedian and an actor
from New York.

Don became known as an insult comedian by responding to hecklers. The audience liked these insults more than his prepared material, so he incorporated them into his act.

Rickles career got a boost when he spotted Frank Sinatra in the audience of a Miami Beach nightclub. Rickles said "I just saw your movie, "The Pride and the Passion" and I want to tell you, the cannon's acting was great." He added, "Make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody!" Sinatra, whose pet name for Rickles was "bullet-head," enjoyed Rickles so much that he encouraged other celebrities to see Rickles' act and be insulted by him. Sinatra's support helped Rickles become a popular headline performer in Las Vegas.

The ball really started rolling, Rickles believes, on the night of October 7, 1965, during his first appearance on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show." His free-wheeling performance that night became the talk of the show business industry, and caused nationwide comment among press and public.

Since then, and for more than 35 years, Don Rickles has appeared in top showrooms across the country, including Atlantic City, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. He has also had a busy TV and motion picture career.

Don Rickles often performs in Atlantic City.
