Buddy Holly was a singer, a songwriter, a guitarist, and a pioneer of Rock and Roll. Just as he was becoming successful and well known, he died in an airplane crash at the age of 22. Yet in his short life, he set the tone for the future of Rock and Roll.
While still in high school, Buddy Holly formed a duo with his friend Bob Montgomery that performed in local clubs. They played mostly country and western music. At the age of 18 Buddy saw Elvis Presley perform and he soon made a sharp turn toward Rock and Roll. By age 20 he had formed a rock band named The Crickets. His band format with both a lead and rhythm guitar player, a bass guitar player and a drummer, set the standard for rock and roll bands. He recorded what perhaps may be the first examples of double track singles and overdubbing. He was also one of the first of the rock musicians to write, produce, and perform his own songs. He was also one of the first to involve himself with every aspect of his music including arranging and record production.
Many of his novel techniques and innovations were emulated by fellow and following rock musicians, including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. Holly was described by music critic Bruce Eder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll."
Two of the most popular and best remembered recordings by Buddy Holly were "Peggy Sue" and "That'll be the Day." Other hits were "The Chirping Cricket," "Buddy Holly," "Rave On" and "Oh Boy!" However Buddy had also recorded so much other music that his record producer, Decca, continued to issue new Buddy Holly music for a number of years.
Recently a 6 CD box set named "Not Fade Away," was issued which covers all of his recordings during the 1956 - 1958 prime years before his death.
Buddy Holly's fame and reputation, if anything, has grown with time. Even today he is well known and often mentioned when people discuss Rock and Roll. His music is still popular and is still played as exemplified by the current touring concert: A Tribute to Buddy Holly - Rock n' Roll Will Never Die.
