About The Beatles

In the late 1950's, guitarist John Lennon formed a band called "The Quarrymen" in Liverpool, England. Paul McCartney and George Harrison soon joined the band. "The Quarrymen" changed their names to the "Silver Beatles" in 1960, and then shortened it to just "The Beatles." Soon Paul Best joined the band as the drummer.

The Beatles

The Beatles performed in clubs at the notorious red light district in Hamburg Germany in both 1960 and 1961. It was there, through numerous long and rigorous performances, that they jelled as a group and developed their appealing musical style, with Paul McCartney on bass, John Lennon on rythum guitar and George Harrison as lead guitar. Ringo Star later replaced Paul Best as drummer. All performed vocals.

On returning to England, they played at the Cavern Club, and in early 1963 their single "Please Please Me" took off and topped the British charts. "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" were soon added to much acclaim. By late 1963, The Beatles popularity had soared to such an extent that they played to screaming, almost hysterical, crowds wherever they went in Europe.

In 1964, the Beatles appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "Beatlemania" broke out all over the United States.

Their popularity continued until 1970 when the group broke up. The Beatles were the most commercially successful and popular band in the history of popular music, selling over one billion records internationally.

Following their breakup, all four Beatles went on to have successful individual careers. However, John Lennon was shot and killed in New York City in 1980 by a deranged fan. In 1999, George Harrison was also assaulted while in his home. He was seriously injured by another deranged fan. He recovered, and in 2000 began work on remastering his classic "All Things Must Pass" album. Harrison had been treated for throat cancer in the late 1990's. But in 2001 it was revealed that he was suffering from an inoperable form of brain cancer. He died on November 29th, 2001. Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney are the remaining Beatles members.
