Alice In Chains is a rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist Jerry Cantrell and vocalist Layne Staley.

The band was one of the most prominent heavy metal bands during the early 1990's. Although often associated with grunge music, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and innovative acoustics. The band's style was hard enough to satisfy metal fans, while the dark lyrics of their songs also appealed to the grunge and punk crowd.
They became known as an alternative rock band.

Their debut album "Facelift" went gold and their second album "Dirt" achieved multiple platinum status in 1992. The band released "Jar of Flies" in 1994, which went to top the album charts.

The band's success during the latter part of the 1990's was hampered by Layne Staley's addiction to drugs, and he died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin in 2002. The band reformed in 2005 with William DuVall eventually taking over the vocals. The band members are Jerry Cantrell (guitar), Mike Inez (bass), Sean Kinney (drums) and William Duvall (vocals). In 2005 the band issued a successful come-back album
named "Black Gives Way to Blue."

The present Alice In Chains band maintains a busy tour schedule that includes stops in Atlantic City.
