Profile

ABBA

ABBA was a Swedish pop music group that originated in Sweden. The groups name is formed by the first letters of the groups first names, the names being: Anni-Fridad, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog.

The groups music employed what some consider catchy song hooks, simple lyrics, and sound effects such as reverb and phasing, and a "wall of sound" achieved by overdubbing the female singers' voices in multiple harmonies.

They first broke into the big time when their song "Waterloo" won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest. Another major success was their song "SOS". These songs are both contained in their "Greatest Hits" album which came out in 1976 and sold more than a million copies in the U.S. in that year. The group went on to become one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts with numerous hits worldwide from 1974 to 1983.

In 1976 the group recorded "Mamma Mia" which went to number 1 on the charts. In 2005 "Maamma Mia" became the basis for the musical "Mamma Mia." In 2008 the film "Mamma Mia" starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, generated huge current interest in ABBA's music.

Although the group broke up in 1983, ABBA has sold over 375 million records worldwide. Their music is still popular, with 2 to 3 million ABBA albums a year being sold.

Although ABBA no longer exists it's music is often played by Tribute Bands featuring "The Music of ABBA." Such bands often perform at Atlantic City venues.
